I sat across the table, listening to her tell her story. It sounded familiar.

She was asking the same questions I had so many times, during what felt like a long season of singleness. Sometimes you just need to say the words out loud.

“My friend and I made a list when we were younger. All the things we wanted in a guy. And I don’t know, we kind of got burned... you know?”

I nodded, because I did know. My journals are full of interactions that left me feeling rejected, disrespected, and wondering, “Do I just need to lower my expectations? Is there something wrong with me?”

I spent many nights curled up with my cats and and a pint of Ben and Jerry’s (flavor of choice- The Tonight Dough!) asking God these questions, and many more. At some point during those honest conversations, both with God and close friends, my heart began to shift. It was a slow process, but eventually I was able to hear the still small voice that kept whispering, “I know what you need.”

And then, I watched Him prove it to me.

First in the gift of a season of singleness. Where I had extra time and space to rest, process, and do the work of healing. And then, in the surprise gift of a man who loves me well as we do the work together. A man who has exceeded my expectations.

As I looked across the table at this sweet girl, wrestling with lists and expectations and questions, I decided to share a little piece of my story. Not because I expect her story to be the same as mine, but because I wanted her to know- God writes good stories. Usually better ones than we can make up on our own.

He knows what we need, and He can be trusted. Through every unexpected plot twist, we can keep hanging onto hope. Because ultimately, He’s the one holding onto us. Until the very end.

Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise.- Hebrews 10:23
