“Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.” -Isaiah 41:10

“Don’t be afraid.”

If I’m honest, sometimes this command feels about as doable for me as winning an Olympic medal in figure skating.

My only skating accomplishments involve staying upright and not breaking anything. (Usually while hanging onto the wall. Don’t judge.)

My skills in “do not fearing” feel just about as limited as my skating skills some days. My fearing skills, on the other hand, are pretty sharp. You name it, I’ve probably got a fear about it. Safety. Money. Failure. Spiders. ALL. THE. THINGS. Because, let’s be honest, life is kind of scary sometimes.

Apparently God knows this, which is maybe why a few hundred times in the Bible He basically says, “Hey… don’t be afraid.” (Side note: I don’t know know if God actually says “hey.” If someone wants to look up the Greek or Hebrew on that and get back to me, go for it.)

“Don’t be afraid!”

I’m looking at my list of skills right now, and I got nothing. Now what?

Now, we can actually make some progress.

When I’m trying to manufacture some sort of fearlessness on my own, it just doesn’t stick.

“Don’t be afraid,”

And maybe it’s because that’s not actually what God is asking me to do. Maybe what He really wants, is for me to hang onto the wall.

“for I am with you.”

To reach out for Him when I feel my feet slipping out from under me.

“Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God.”

The only reason not to be afraid, is if you have someone with you who is bigger than your fears.

“I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.”

And that’s exactly what we have.
